Across the year the sea averages 14.7 °C, cooler than 76% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.

June is the wettest month (70 mm) and January the driest (2 mm); the yearly total is about 280 mm.

Daylight runs from 10.0 hours in June to 14.3 hours in December; in mid-February the sun rises at 07:21 and sets at 20:38 local time.

Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces west (280°). Open water fills about 47% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

The sun sets over the sea in every month; in mid-June it goes down at 17:45 local time on a bearing of 298°.

Straight out to the west there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell.

The sea floor is still within the shallow coastal margin 1 km out; 3 km offshore the depth is about 72 m. Behind the beach the ground is about 29 m above sea level 500 m inland and 102 m at 1.5 km.

Within 1 km, the land is 37% built-up land, 33% tree cover and 15% grassland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): a partly built-up setting. Water makes up 50% of that circle.

Cold water all year

The sea peaks at 17.2 °C in February. Most swimmers find water below 20 °C cold; a wetsuit is common here.
