Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces east-north-east (75°). Open water fills about 50% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

At no time of year does the sun set over the sea here: sunset bearings run from 229° to 315°, behind the land.

Sunrise is over the sea in every month.

Straight out to the east-north-east about 500 km of open sea lies before the next coast, enough for large swells to build. The beach is on an island of about 954 km².

About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 7 m deep and 13 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 5 m above sea level 500 m inland and 5 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.

Within 1 km, the land is 58% tree cover, 21% grassland and 9% cropland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): a largely natural setting. Water makes up 61% of that circle.
