When to go

The beach-day index peaks in November–February; February scores 9.5/10 with highs of 29 °C, sea at 23.9 °C and 22 mm of rain.

In February that is 0.4 points above the median of the 107 beaches in India covered by this atlas.

At its warmest the water here is 0.7 °C warmer than the India median for June (29.2 °C).

Across the year the sea averages 27.5 °C, warmer than 85% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.

July is the wettest month (364 mm) and December the driest (9 mm); the yearly total is about 1,720 mm.

Daylight runs from 10.8 hours in December to 13.4 hours in June; in mid-February the sun rises at 06:11 and sets at 17:36 local time.

Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces south-south-east (165°). Open water fills about 50% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

The sun sets over the sea in November–January; in mid-December it goes down at 16:59 local time on a bearing of 245°.

Sunrise is over the sea in September–April.

Straight out to the south-south-east there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell.

About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 3 m deep and 4 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 10 m above sea level 500 m inland and 6 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.

Within 1 km, the land is 49% tree cover, 31% built-up land and 8% bare ground, sand or rock (satellite land-cover map, 2021): a partly built-up setting. Water makes up 53% of that circle.
