When to go

The beach-day index peaks in November–January; January scores 9.8/10 with highs of 31 °C, sea at 25.9 °C and 1 mm of rain.

In January that is 0.3 points above the median of the 107 beaches in India covered by this atlas.

Across the year the sea averages 27.9 °C, warmer than 90% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.

July is the wettest month (792 mm) and January the driest (1 mm); the yearly total is about 2,460 mm.

Daylight runs from 11.0 hours in December to 13.2 hours in June; in mid-January the sun rises at 07:13 and sets at 18:20 local time.

Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces west-south-west (245°). Open water fills about 50% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

The sun sets over the sea in every month; in mid-June it goes down at 19:15 local time on a bearing of 295°.

Straight out to the west-south-west there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell.

About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 7 m deep and 7 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 18 m above sea level 500 m inland and 125 m at 1.5 km.

Within 1 km, the land is 76% tree cover, 9% bare ground, sand or rock and 6% cropland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): a largely natural setting. Water makes up 63% of that circle.
