When to go
The beach-day index peaks in April–May, July–August and October–November; May scores 8.5/10 with highs of 26 °C, sea at 25.0 °C and 104 mm of rain.
In May that is 3.8 points above the median of the 2,466 beaches in United States covered by this atlas.
At its warmest the water here is 7.4 °C warmer than the United States median for September (20.9 °C).
Across the year the sea averages 24.8 °C, warmer than 76% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.
June is the wettest month (188 mm) and February the driest (64 mm); the yearly total is about 1,350 mm.
Daylight runs from 10.4 hours in December to 13.9 hours in June; in mid-May the sun rises at 06:32 and sets at 20:04 local time.
Orientation, sun and shore
The shore faces east (95°). Open water fills about 39% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.
At no time of year does the sun set over the sea here: sunset bearings run from 244° to 297°, behind the land.
Sunrise is over the sea in every month.
Straight out to the east there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell.
About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 8 m deep and 13 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 4 m above sea level 500 m inland and 3 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.
Within 1 km, the land is 68% built-up land, 12% grassland and 8% bare ground, sand or rock (satellite land-cover map, 2021): an urban beach. Water makes up 38% of that circle.
