When to go
The beach-day index peaks in July–August; August scores 8.7/10 with highs of 27 °C, sea at 22.9 °C and 103 mm of rain.
In August that is 0.6 points above the median of the 2,466 beaches in United States covered by this atlas.
Across the year the sea averages 13.2 °C, cooler than 80% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.
October is the wettest month (120 mm) and January the driest (81 mm); the yearly total is about 1,210 mm.
Daylight runs from 9.3 hours in December to 15.1 hours in June; in mid-August the sun rises at 06:03 and sets at 19:54 local time.
Orientation, sun and shore
The shore faces south-south-east (150°). Open water fills about 47% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.
At no time of year does the sun set over the sea here: sunset bearings run from 240° to 302°, behind the land.
Sunrise is over the sea in October–March.
Straight out to the south-south-east there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell. The beach is on an island of about 22 km².
About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 7 m deep and 11 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 3 m above sea level 500 m inland and 1 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.
Within 1 km, the land is 42% bare ground, sand or rock, 26% grassland and 22% built-up land (satellite land-cover map, 2021): a partly built-up setting. Water makes up 47% of that circle.
