When to go
The beach-day index peaks in May and September–October; May scores 8.8/10 with highs of 27 °C, sea at 24.6 °C and 92 mm of rain.
In May that is 4.1 points above the median of the 2,466 beaches in United States covered by this atlas.
At its warmest the water here is 6.8 °C warmer than the United States median for August (22.5 °C).
Across the year the sea averages 23.5 °C, warmer than 73% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.
August is the wettest month (178 mm) and November the driest (90 mm); the yearly total is about 1,530 mm.
Daylight runs from 10.2 hours in December to 14.1 hours in June; in mid-May the sun rises at 05:54 and sets at 19:34 local time.
Orientation, sun and shore
The shore faces east (90°). Open water fills about 72% of the horizon close by, which makes it an exposed spot with water on most sides.
The sun sets over the sea in May and August; in mid-May it goes down at 19:34 local time on a bearing of 292°.
Sunrise is over the sea in June–July and November–January.
The opposite shore is only about 500 m away to the east, which keeps the water sheltered from big waves. The beach is on an island of about 46 km².
The sea floor is still within the shallow coastal margin 1 km out; 3 km offshore the depth is about 8 m. Behind the beach the ground is about 4 m above sea level 500 m inland and 2 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.
Within 1 km, the land is 67% built-up land, 30% bare ground, sand or rock and 3% grassland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): an urban beach. Water makes up 72% of that circle.
