Reference

Waikīkī (; Hawaiian: [wɐjˈkiːkiː, vɐjˈtiːtiː]) is a Honolulu neighborhood and the eponymous Waikīkī beach on its south shore, on the island of Oʻahu in the U.S. state of Hawaii. (Despite situational use of the spelling "Waikiki", typically in materials aimed at tourists, the spelling "Waikīkī" is official and common.) Waikīkī Beach is one of six beaches in the district, along with Queen's Beach, Kuhio Beach, Gray's Beach, Fort DeRussy Beach, and Kahanamoku Beach.

Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces south-west (225°). Open water fills about 44% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

The sun sets over the sea in every month; in mid-June it goes down at 19:13 local time on a bearing of 295°.

Straight out to the south-west there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell. The beach is on Oahu, an island of about 1,564 km².

The sea floor is still within the shallow coastal margin 1 km out; 3 km offshore the depth is about 245 m. Behind the beach the ground is about 13 m above sea level 500 m inland and 8 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.

Within 1 km, the land is 57% built-up land, 26% grassland and 11% tree cover (satellite land-cover map, 2021): an urban beach. Water makes up 51% of that circle.
