Sanur (Balinese: ᬧᬲᬶᬄᬲᬦᬸᬃ, Pasih Sanur; Indonesian: Pantai Sanur, pronounced sah-noor) is a coastal stretch of beach east of Denpasar in southeast Bali (about a 30-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport), which has grown into a little town in its own right. A 5.1 km (3.2 mi) area of Sanur's coastline, from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari Beach, was reclaimed in 2008.

When to go

The beach-day index peaks in May–October; August scores 9.5/10 with highs of 27 °C, sea at 26.3 °C and 16 mm of rain.

That matches the median for beaches in Indonesia in the same month.

Across the year the sea averages 27.9 °C, warmer than 90% of the coastal beaches in the atlas.

January is the wettest month (318 mm) and August the driest (16 mm); the yearly total is about 1,630 mm.

Daylight runs from 11.6 hours in June to 12.6 hours in December; in mid-August the sun rises at 06:29 and sets at 18:18 local time.

Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces east (80°). Open water fills about 53% of the horizon close by, which makes it an exposed spot with water on most sides.

At no time of year does the sun set over the sea here: sunset bearings run from 246° to 293°, behind the land.

Sunrise is over the sea in every month.

Straight out to the east the next coast is roughly 80 km away, so waves are mostly wind-driven sea rather than ocean swell. The beach is on an island of about 5,398 km².

About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 12 m deep and 36 m at 3 km. Behind the beach the ground is about 5 m above sea level 500 m inland and 9 m at 1.5 km, a flat coastal plain.

Within 1 km, the land is 52% built-up land, 25% tree cover and 18% grassland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): an urban beach. Water makes up 60% of that circle.
