Orientation, sun and shore

JunDecNESW

The shore faces north-east (55°). Open water fills about 33% of the horizon close by, which makes it an open stretch of shore.

At no time of year does the sun set over the sea here: sunset bearings run from 246° to 293°, behind the land.

Sunrise is over the sea in every month.

Straight out to the north-east there is open water for more than 2,000 km, so the beach is exposed to long ocean swell. The beach is on an island of about 5,395 km².

About 1 km offshore the sea is roughly 2 m deep and 14 m at 3 km, a shallow, gently shelving sea floor. Behind the beach the ground is about 9 m above sea level 500 m inland and 21 m at 1.5 km.

Within 1 km, the land is 40% tree cover, 40% built-up land and 16% grassland (satellite land-cover map, 2021): an urban beach. Water makes up 32% of that circle.
